Summary

I wanted to love this… it just wasn’t for me sadly! I know I’m in the minority here but I’m so disappointed that this was goodreads 2022 fiction winner! Firstly, I would say only read this if you really love gaming。 I was so disinterested in the story… I didn’t like any of the characters at all。 Really didn’t care about what happened to them。 I had to force myself to finish it。 I won’t be recommending this。 Sorry to any fans of this, I don’t mean to be harsh。 It was written well but the story ju I wanted to love this… it just wasn’t for me sadly! Didn't really like this book at all but then had to finish it。 I feel like it was dragged out and I'm not sure why but I didn't like Sam。 Didn't really like this book at all but then had to finish it。 I feel like it was dragged out and I'm not sure why but I didn't like Sam。 。。。more

Sam, Sadie, and Marx are all memorable and the writing style is interesting like a video game。 But the overall mood I got from this was depressing and I don't like depressing stories。 Ultimately though, at the heart of this are stories about friendships。 Sam, Sadie, and Marx are all memorable and the writing style is interesting like a video game。 But the overall mood I got from this was depressing and I don't like depressing stories。 Ultimately though, at the heart of this are stories about friendships。 。。。more

I spoke about this book for an hour and a half on my Patreon with some amazing co-hosts。 If you'd like to watch it, here's an initiation link https://patreon。com/katiecolson?utm_m。。。This is hard for me to articulate。 On one hand, I like so many aspects of this book。 The directions it took with female/male friendships。 The in-depth depiction of history over chemistry when it came to relationships。 Focusing on platonic kinship over romantic ones。 I adored that。 Buuuuut。。。It took me a week to liste I spoke about this book for an hour and a half on my Patreon with some amazing co-hosts。 If you'd like to watch it, here's an initiation link https://patreon。com/katiecolson?utm_m。。。This is hard for me to articulate。 On one hand, I like so many aspects of this book。 The directions it took with female/male friendships。 The in-depth depiction of history over chemistry when it came to relationships。 Focusing on platonic kinship over romantic ones。 I adored that。 Buuuuut。。。It took me a week to listen to the AUDIOBOOK! How?!?!? I don't understand。 And every person I know who's read this has said the same。 Some as much as 3 weeks of reading。 That's preposterous。 I understand a book being difficult to intake。 But a full week of an audiobook? That took me out of the story。That being said, I really enjoyed this story。 I think upon re-read, this would be even better。I love, love, love, the examples of Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley。 Those were my childhood comfort games。 I played Harvest Moon so much, I got exhausted with myself。 For Sadie to also be obsessed with those games gave me an attachment to the story and the game-creator-element that I hadn't experienced before。 Because she took such inspiration from Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley, I could so vividly see her worlds and animations。 I didn't think that I would be able to immerse myself in a gamer-world like this but it surprised me。I really enjoyed this and I think a lot of people will。 I didn't adore it the way I had anticipated to。 But it was still an excellent read。 。。。more

Marx is the best character, fight me; lists as a narrative device is my jam, love that they're used to both set the vibe of characters and scenes but also to add levity to otherwise darker passages。 Marx is the best character, fight me; lists as a narrative device is my jam, love that they're used to both set the vibe of characters and scenes but also to add levity to otherwise darker passages。 。。。more

4。5The most beautiful writing, the best book ever for the first 3/4, then I was slightly let down。

This was a different book (and made me want to play games) that was about games but so much more。 It was an interesting tale, not amazing, but good and the writing was very good。

Caroline

I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this but I surprised myself!

“And what is love, in the end?” Alabaster said。 “Except the irrational desire to put evolutionary competitiveness aside in order to ease someone else’s journey through life?”holy freakin’ sh*t this might be one of my favorite books of all time。 i haven’t felt sucked into a book in a LONG time。 a love story encompassing romantic love, platonic love, unconditional love, the ups and downs of friendships and relationships。 this book made my hopeless romantic, little gamer heart soar。

If Normal People and Looking for Alaska had a baby this would be it。This book somehow made me feel as though life is bleak and meaningless but still somehow incredibly beautiful。 So, so, so, incredibly beautiful。

The cadence of “tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” made me want to pick it up I loved so much of the dialogue and the first third was perfect— overall, Zevin established what I thought was a believable and compelling relationship between Sam and Sadie; there were several big shifts in their friendship that made sense after both experienced the personal devastations that come with age / having to collaborate together over the span of decades。 The two main characters were given such rich backstories in the first third of the book and I found myself falling absolutely in love after getting introduced to the childhood versions of Sam and Sadie。 Even the side characters— Sam’s mother and Marx in particular— felt so brightly colored and jumped off the pages。 Sadie’s experiences of being a woman in this industry also felt real, as did the problems that plague creative work (credit, interpersonal relationships, trust)。 That being said, I wish the author had devoted more attention to explaining the changes in Sam in late adulthood。 Zevin mentions that Sam changed his Jewish last name, he embodies this character version of himself, he has these controversial opinions about cultural appropriation, etc。 and I guess it could all just be attributed to Sam’s growing discontentment with feeling helpless physically/emotionally and unable to get past his bitterness, but the author doesn’t delve much deeper than that。 Other criticisms— I don’t mind when books aren’t necessarily plot driven, but the pacing in the middle (before the big twist) really did not deliver imo。 There was also one minor conflict about romantic love around the 3/4 mark that I felt was hastily thrown in just for the sake of having some tension? Other than that, everything in terms of pacing and character reactions after the twist was good, if not bittersweet or melancholic, for me。 I also really appreciated the inclusion of the video games aspects of this book; I’m by no means a gamer myself, I never found their talks about developing “Ichigo” to be boring and it was easy to see that the characters held such an intense love for the topic。 Their relationships to games— playing them, building them, sharing the experience of games— illustrated the real value that games can bring to society, from helping us envision better worlds to learning how to continue living in the face of overwhelming grief (and their sentiments aren’t restricted to just gamers— I think artists of all forms can relate)。 3。5/5 stars“‘What is a game?’ Marx said。 ‘It’s tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow。 It’s the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption。’” 。。。more

This book came with a lot of good reviews, and I had high expectations。 The first half of the book really delivered on that promise。 I loved the friendship of Sadie and Sam, and getting into the details of the game they were building。 But the second half of the book really dragged on, and completely fell apart into several unrelated directions。 Sadie's character held a lot of promise initially, but her journey only seemed to follow the stereotypes of a female game developer - an abusive relation This book came with a lot of good reviews, and I had high expectations。 The first half of the book really delivered on that promise。 I loved the friendship of Sadie and Sam, and getting into the details of the game they were building。 But the second half of the book really dragged on, and completely fell apart into several unrelated directions。 Sadie's character held a lot of promise initially, but her journey only seemed to follow the stereotypes of a female game developer - an abusive relationship with a power figure, not getting credit for her work etc。 Her character started feeling more and more flat and one-dimensional, and I didn't get a strong sense of who she was as a person。 Sam's character on the other hand, was masterfully done, and I could fully relate to everything he went through。 Maybe this was intentional on the part of the author and in keeping with the times, that the male protagonist overshadows the female。 Still, I would have liked to see more depth and thought given to Sadie's character development。 My favorite part of the book remains the gameplay and development descriptions。 In some places, that truly transported me to another world。 。。。more

This felt like a long book。 I can't figure out why so many people have raved about this book。 I tried but I never liked the main characters。 Despite several traumatic events the plot was somehow really boring。 There wasn't enough feeling behind any of it。 I would have quit if I hadn't been reading this for a reading challenge。 What a waste of time!

I really enjoyed this read! I think just the character growth and how it all felt from chapter to chapter, was enough to relate to the humanness that was captured in Zevin’s writing。This book is wonderful in so many achingly painful ways, there are so many important topics brought to the surface and I certainly felt myself invested in Sam and Sadie’s relationship。For me, this book was easy to put down and also easy to come back to。 The words flowed in such a way that made you feel like you were I really enjoyed this read! As an AI language model, I am not capable of having personal opinions, but I can provide a brief summary of the book "Demà, i demà, i demà" by Catalan author and journalist Martí Gironell。 The novel tells the story of five generations of a family from the Pyrenees, starting in 1814 and ending in 2014。 Through the lives of different family members, the book explores key historical events that impacted Catalonia, such as the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the Franco regime, as well as the social and economic changes that have occurred over two centuries。 Each generation faces different challenges and struggles, yet they all share a common theme: the importance of resilience and the power of hope。 The title of the book, which means "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" in Catalan, embodies this idea of looking towards the future despite the difficulties of the present。 Overall, "Demà, i demà, i demà" is a sweeping saga that delves into Catalan history, family dynamics, and the human capacity to overcome adversity。
